SKIPPACK FRENCH MARKET HOAGIE SALE – MAY 1, 2021 

On May 1, our church will participate in the Skippack French Market by holding a hoagie sale and also by selling croissant sandwiches for take-out.  More information is forthcoming.  

DON’T GIVE UP MOVEMENT           

Our Outreach committee is inviting everyone in our congregation to join us in sharing messages from the “Don’t Give Up” movement.  This outreach was started to encourage people who are considering suicide to not give up.  We have yard signs, postcards, stickers, and business cards with messages that say things like “You are Enough” and “Your Mistakes Don’t Define You.” These messages are especially important right now as many people are struggling with their mental and emotional health after the many months of our pandemic.  Please pick up yard signs at church and other signs to promote this message of love for our neighbors.  Here is more about the movement:  https://www.dontgiveupsigns.com/ 

DAILY BREAD COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY 

We continue to collect food and toiletry items for the Daily Bread Food Pantry.  They can be left at the doors of the church.

The Daily Bread's Current needs change every few weeks. This is their latest list of needs:

REOPENING NEWS! – from Nan Burch, our Re-opening Committee Chair 

Upon recommendation by the Re-opening Committee and with Consistory's approval, we have decided to again re-open our Church to in-person services beginning on Palm Sunday (March 28) at 10:15AM in the Sanctuary.  

The same restrictions will be in place as when we held services in the Education Building. These include:  distancing, wearing masks, taking temperatures, sanitizing when necessary, etc. As before, we will be limited to an attendance of 25, and you must reserve your place in advance of each service. To do this, email or call Pastor Amelie or our Administrative Assistant Deb Clewell.  (610-584-4054) 

Please note that we strongly discourage gathering in groups before or after the service, and remember that distancing must be observed at all times. We also encourage those older or compromised persons who have not yet been vaccinated to keep viewing services via Facebook or Zoom. We are thrilled that we may again gather together in person, but your safety is our greatest concern!

Now What -- A Message for Easter Sunday 2021

 

Let us recall the words of the Easter Story as they are written in the Gospel of John, chapter 20 verses one through eighteen:

Scripture Reading John 20: 1-18

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 

So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 

Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 

He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 

Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 

as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 

Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 

(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 

Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 

and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 

At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Here ends this reading of the Word of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God. Amen.  

Spirit of power and new possibility, through the scriptures, open our minds to understanding, our hearts to loving, and our wills to carrying out the mission of the Risen Christ, God’s Living Word. Amen.

This morning, we celebrate that Christ the Lord is Risen today.  Alleluia! 

On a brutal Friday afternoon, many, many years ago, Jesus Christ was put to death.  The Roman rulers of Israel and the scared Temple Authorities thought they eliminated the problem of Jesus Christ, the man from Nazareth, a Galilean, who many people believed was the Messiah.  The man we know was the Messiah.
Jesus’ teachings were inconsistent with the way Judaism was being practiced in the first century.  If people followed Jesus, the Temple authorities would be irrelevant….they would be out of a job…they would be out of power.  So, they eliminated their problem when they asked for Jesus to be put to death.
Or so they thought.

The Romans also were uneasy with Jesus.  If he was truly the King of the Jews, and was god embodied in man, he was a threat to Roman rule.  How could they rule Israel of a living God led the people against them?  How could they ensure loyalty to the Romans and their government and their Caesar If Jesus was the real Messiah?  The Romans would lose their control over their colonies if the colonized people rose up against them.  So, they eliminated their problem when they put Jesus to death.

Or so they thought.

Early on the first Easter morning, despite Mary’s despair and confusion about the reality for the Resurrection, Jesus rose from the dead.  What is impossible for man is possible for God. God loved the people of the world so much that God shared Jesus with us. And, then when the people of the world messed up and killed Jesus, God loved and forgave the people of the world and had Jesus rise from the dead.

And, when Jesus rose from the dead, he wasn’t a re-animated mummy.  He wasn’t like Frankenstein or a zombie.  He was restored to life with his mind and body healed and restored.  Jesus seemed a tad more divine than a normal person – he could appear and disappear to his followers.  But, it was Jesus, in the flesh, with the wounds he received on the cross – the nail holes in his hands, the mark on his side when his skin was pierced by a sword.  Jesus was restored to life. 

On the first Good Friday, humanity really missed the mark.  We misunderstood Jesus’ presence.  We misunderstood how to react to Jesus and his teachings. We were selfish. We were blind. We were cruel and brutal. 

And, it was us.  We may find it convenient to say the Jewish Temple Authorities called for Jesus’ death and the Romans crucified him, but if we were around 2000 years ago, who would we be?  As much as I hope I would have understood Jesus and his significance, I suspect I would have been oblivious. People like me crucified Jesus.  People like us crucified Jesus.  People who are rule followers.  People who follow orders.  People who do their jobs.  People who respect government. People who respect religious teachers.  Patriotic people. Religious people. People like us.

Despite the ways we fail God, God does not fail us.  On the first Good Friday, Jesus died because of human failure. Jesus died because of human sinfulness.  And, Jesus died so that we would become reconciled to God. Jesus took our sins on his back and died for us.  Because of Jesus and his love of us, our sins are forgiven. We are redeemed.  Our sins are washed away, are washed down the drain. 

Jesus’ resurrection is a reminder that God loves the people of the world.  No matter how we fail….  No matter how we mess up… God forgives us. God loves us.

We are never alone in this life because God’s Holy Spirit is present with us.  God’s Holy Spirit accompanies us through this life comforts us when we suffer.  God loves us and forgives us.  Jesus took our sins upon his shoulders when he died. And, Jesus was resurrected to show us that God forgives us and loves us no matter what.

The question of the day is “Now what?” Now that we are forgiven, how do we respond? Now that we know we are loved by God, how do we respond? Now we are reconciled to God, how do we respond?

Now what?

Jesus taught us the most important commandments we are to follow are to “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” In response to God’s love for us, we are to love God and love each other.  So, as we claim the Easter faith, as we claim Christ resurrected, we are also called to work to love God with our whole hearts and to love each other will all our might.

Let’s do it.

In A Garden of New Life -- Easter Sunrise Message 2021

 

Scripture Reading John 20:1-18 from the Message

1 Early in the morning on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone was moved away from the entrance.
2 She ran at once to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, breathlessly panting, "They took the Master from the tomb. We don't know where they've put him."
3 Peter and the other disciple left immediately for the tomb.
4 They ran, neck and neck. The other disciple got to the tomb first, outrunning Peter.
5 Stooping to look in, he saw the pieces of linen cloth lying there, but he didn't go in.
6 Simon Peter arrived after him, entered the tomb, observed the linen cloths lying there,
7 and the kerchief used to cover his head not lying with the linen cloths but separate, neatly folded by itself.
8 Then the other disciple, the one who had gotten there first, went into the tomb, took one look at the evidence, and believed.
9 No one yet knew from the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.
10 The disciples then went back home.
11 But Mary stood outside the tomb weeping. As she wept, she knelt to look into the tomb
12 and saw two angels sitting there, dressed in white, one at the head, the other at the foot of where Jesus' body had been laid.
13 They said to her, "Woman, why do you weep?" "They took my Master," she said, "and I don't know where they put him."
14 After she said this, she turned away and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn't recognize him.
15 Jesus spoke to her, "Woman, why do you weep? Who are you looking for?" She, thinking that he was the gardener, said, "Mister, if you took him, tell me where you put him so I can care for him."
16 Jesus said, "Mary." Turning to face him, she said in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" meaning "Teacher!"
17 Jesus said, "Don't cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell them, 'I ascend to my Father and your Father, my God and your God.'"
18 Mary Magdalene went, telling the news to the disciples: "I saw the Master!" And she told them everything he said to her.

Meditation: In a Garden of New Life

Early on the first Easter morning, Mary Magdalene went to visit Jesus’ tomb. As the dawn started to spread across the sky, Mary was still grappling with the trauma of Jesus’ death. Her lord and savior, her best friend, the person who she changed everything in her life to follow, was dead. Mary was still in the midst of the very early stages of what we call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She replayed the events of Good Friday over and over again in her head. It was like she was still living those events. She was in shock – like many of us after the death of a loved one, Mary probably kept asking herself if she could have changed how that day unfolded – could she have stopped Jesus from being arrested? Could she have stopped the trial that condemned him to death? Could she have stopped the execution? Although we know Mary had no power to stop Jesus’ death, she doubted herself anyway.

So, when Mary arrived at the Tomb, she didn’t understand what she saw right in front of her eyes. Mary saw the empty tomb and deduced Jesus’ body was stolen. Her hysteria was amplified. First they killed Jesus, and then they stole his body!
Mary rushed to tell the disciples Jesus body was missing. Peter and another disciple went and checked the grave, and they saw evidence of the resurrection. They were excited and went to tell the others about the miracle that had taken place.

But Mary, poor Mary was distraught. She went back to the tomb and saw angels and still didn’t see signs of the resurrection. Jesus approached Mary and began talking to her and she still didn’t see signs of resurrection. She was blinded to who he was because she was so distraught.

Finally, when Jesus spoke her name, Mary saw him. She realized who he was. She understood he was resurrected. Her eyes were opened. The man she watched die on Friday was restored to life.

On the first Easter Sunday, almost two-thousand years ago, God showed that God’s love is more powerful than human failure. Most of the people Jesus came across just didn’t get it. The people of Nazareth, Jesus’ hometown, ran him out of town. The people of Jerusalem who welcomed Jesus on Palm Sunday turned against him just a few days later. The priests and Temple authorities didn’t accept Jesus’ teachings and wanted him out of the way. The Roman authorities killed Jesus rather than allow anyone to threaten their rule -- they were afraid Jesus would cause an insurrection against them. Many of the people who heard about Jesus in the first century or even heard and saw Jesus in the first century, just didn’t get it. God’s love is more powerful than human failure.

Despite all of the ways people fail to understand God’s intentions for us and our world, God still loves us. Despite all of the ways we mess us, God still loves us. In John 3:16, we are reminded: “For God so loved the world that God gave God’s one and only Son, that whoever believes in God shall not perish but have eternal life.” God loves us. God loves us so much God shared Jesus with us. And, when the people of the first century put Jesus to death, God showed us that love overcomes death. God loves us so much that God resurrected Jesus. God loves us so much that God did not allow the last words of Jesus to be spoken from the cross. God loves us so much that God wanted us to know that nothing we can do is so awful we can be separated from the love of God.

When we say together the words of the United Church of Christ’s Statement of Faith – our common testimony – we proclaim that God comes to us “In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior.” Through Jesus, God has shared our common lot and has lived the mortal life of a person. And, through Jesus Christ, God conquered sin and death and reconciled the world to God.

This “reconciled” concept is important. It means that God doesn’t hold our sins and failings against us. Instead, when Jesus was on the cross, our sins died with him. And the resurrection of Jesus is a sign that “all is forgiven.” God loves and forgives us no matter what. God loved and forgave the people who put Jesus on the cross and God loves and forgives us when we fail.
So, on this Easter Sunday, we rejoice. God loves and forgives us. God doesn’t let anything stand in God’s way….not our failure to understand God’s plans….not our blindness to what is right in front of us…not our misgivings….not our failings. God loves and forgives us. God loves and forgives the people of our world.

Thank God for God’s love and grace on this Easter Sunday.

LENT 2021

We are in the midst of Holy Week.  Most years, we join with our Skippack Christians neighbors for Lenten services at each other’s churches.  The churches of our Skippack Ministerium are all doing church differently in the time of Covid and most are not hosting in-person worship services.

HOLY WEEK AT TRINITY

We are have a prayer walk/stations of the cross set up in our cemetery.  It has 14 stations; each has a painting and a prayer.  This year, our paintings are focused on the Pandemic Hope and were created by the artist Mary Button.  https://www.marybutton.com/#/pandemic-hope/  .  You are invited to take a prayer walk in our cemetery at any point during Holy Week. 

Today, we have two Good Friday Worship services.  At 12 pm on Facebook and on 7 pm on Zoom.  Tune into Facebook at 11:30 AM for a hymn sing.   We will also have a hymn sing on the Zoom worship link at 6:30 PM.

On Easter Sunday, we will have a 7:30 am Sunrise service at the cross in the cemetery.  We will invite people to respect social distance and stay home if they are not feeling well.  Please bring your own lawn chair.  We will wear masks and spread out during the service.

We will also have a 10:15 service.  It will be live-streamed on facebook and will also have worship in our sanctuary limited to 25 people.  Please RSVP to Pastor Amelie if you are planning on being in-person at the service.  Spaces are filling up quickly.   At 9:45, there will be a Hymn Sing streamed on facebook.

We will have an 11 am worship service on ZOOM.  The 10:15 and 11 am services will include Holy Communion.

TRINITY FAMILY CRAFT ACTIVITY

On April 17, from 10 AM to 12 PM, we will have a springtime craft activity.  The craft is simple but everyone is invited to participate.  If you would like a craft kit, please let me know and I will make sure you receive one.  The craft bags will also include other Christian activity pages and coloring sheets.

SKIPPACK FRENCH MARKET HOAGIE SALE – MAY 1, 2021

On May 1, our church will participate in the Skippack French Market by holding a hoagie sale and also by selling croissant sandwiches for take-out.  More information is forthcoming. 

DAILY BREAD COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY

We continue to collect food and toiletry items for the Daily Bread Food Pantry.  They can be left at the doors of the church.

The Daily Bread's Current needs change every few weeks. This is their latest list of needs:

Personal Care: Laundry Detergent, Cleaning Supplies *

Food: Jelly, Jam, Peanut Butter, Mayonnaise, Ketchup, Rice, Skillet Helpers or Rice a Roni, Cookies, Chips, Juice, Shelf Stable Milk, Stuffing, Pie Crust Mix, Pie Crust Fillings in cans,

Pet Care: Dry Cat food*

And any other items you wish to donate would greatly be appreciated!

*These items can’t be purchased with Food Stamps. 

THE DAILY BREAD IS REQUESTING DONATIONS OF VEGETABLE SEEDS SO THEIR GUESTS MAY PLANT GARDENS AND GROW SOME OF THEIR OWN FOOD.

REOPENING NEWS! – from Nan Burch, our Re-opening Committee Chair

Upon recommendation by the Re-opening Committee and with Consistory's approval, we have decided to again re-open our Church to in-person services beginning on Palm Sunday (March 28) at 10:15AM in the Sanctuary.


The same restrictions will be in place as when we held services in the Education Building. These include: distancing, wearing masks, taking temperatures, sanitizing when necessary, etc. As before, we will be limited to an attendance of 25, and you must reserve your place in advance of each service. To do this, email or call Pastor Amelie or our Administrative Assistant Deb Clewell. (610-584-4054)

Please note that we strongly discourage gathering in groups before or after the service, and remember that distancing must be observed at all times. We also encourage those older or compromised persons who have not yet been vaccinated to keep viewing services via Facebook or Zoom. We are thrilled that we may again gather together in person, but your safety is our greatest concern!

If you would like to borrow a hymnal from the church, please let me know and I will arrange for you to receive one.
